Children gathering flowers for moms, dads,grandparents and other special people in their lives. Instill the ecology for earth by sharing the magic of nature in the young people of today. Start by letting them have their own garden tools and have a designated place to store them.
Take your child shopping to find their own set of out and buy them some children’s gardening tools. Find their favorites and maybe a couple more. Many colorful tools are available such as buckets, rakes, hoes, wheelbarrows, and shovels. Other fun items are small stool, gloves, plant markers, figurines, a kneeling pad, etc. Be sure to explain how to use all the tools, markers, and shovels in an ergonomic fashion to avoid little aches and strains.
Start with simple projects, such as digging up dandelions with that special tool of theirs. You can give advice on what to plant then let them choose. Have them plant some flower seeds and give the seeds a good drink of water. In a few days you can point out the new sprouts and how exciting they are. Explain what it takes to get the seeds to sprout and how to care for the new plants. This is the part they actually use those tools.
Find a good location that is easily accessible for them. Try changing that unused sandbox into a mini garden for children. Add some good soil mixture and let them plan out the arrangement of planting. Add some markers so they can track the seedling growth. How exciting it is to harvest the crop they planted!
Help them personalize their special garden with decorations and let them help pick them out.
Hand crafted items are great such as those cool rock collections they hand picked. Maybe decorate those larger rocks with flowers or names painted. Let them be creative and add their own ideas.
When gardening with children be patient,encouraging them and being very positive while teaching them about nature. Keep in mind how beneficial this whole experience is to your child. They will beam with pride when picking their first bouquet or bright red tomato!
